United Airlines has revealed the first international assignments for its new Airbus A321XLR fleet. The long-range narrowbody, dubbed ‘Born to Explore’ by the airline, is set to play a central role in United’s largest-ever international network expansion.

The type will make its international debut on December 1, 2026, operating from Washington/Dulles to both Amsterdam and Dublin. This will be followed by an initial period of domestic service starting in September. During summer 2027, United will use the A321XLR to open five new transatlantic routes.

A daily New York/Newark-Luxembourg will launch on April 2. This will be followed by daily Washington/Dulles-Toulouse flights from April 26. Newark-Ibiza begins four times weekly on May 31, Valencia three times weekly on June 2, and Marseille daily from June 4. United will be the only US carrier offering nonstop US services to all five destinations.

The XLR-operated routes form part of a much broader expansion adding ten international destinations during 2027. Other additions include Newark services to Ljubljana, Olbia, and Catania to be operated by Boeing 767-300ER/400ERs; plus Terceira in the Azores with a Boeing 737 MAX 8. San Francisco-Okinawa will launch on March 27 and be flown by the carrier’s Boeing 777-200ERs. United will also add Denver-Paris/Charles de Gaulle, Los Angeles-Osaka and Washington/Dulles-Milan/Malpensa services. San Francisco-Tel Aviv is also set to return.

Maiden explorer

United received its first A321-271NYXLR, N64321 (c/n 12581), in June. It has 50 examples on order. The carrier expects another five aircraft by the end of 2026 and 15 deliveries during 2027. The type will progressively replace its ageing Boeing 757s. Despite Airbus production and supply-chain constraints, United says it remains confident sufficient XLRs will arrive to operate the planned schedule.

Configured for just 150 passengers, United’s premium-heavy XLRs feature 20 Polaris lie-flat suites, 12 Premium Plus seats, 34 Economy Plus and 84 Economy seats. Other features include free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members, 4K OLED entertainment screens, larger overhead bins and an Economy snack bar. A dedicated Economy Plus row will also feature an unoccupied middle seat fitted with a shared table.
