Airliner World August 2012

In the March issue of Airliner World, we hear how a vibrant domestic market and rapidly growing international traffic is driving Vietnam Airlines to become a major force in Southeast Asia. We also find out how US budget carrier Allegiant Air has found its niche serving smaller regional airports, and we profile the wave of ultra-low-cost operators attempting to break the Air Canada/West Jet duopoly and conquer the Canadian market. Elsewhere in this edition, we shine the spotlight on the small heavyweight, Hahn Air, which operates just three small business jets on twice-weekly scheduled services, yet it sold more than 30 million tickets last year. We also chronicle the history of the venerable Tupolev Tu-154 – in many ways the definitive Soviet airliner – and we learn how bmi regional is preparing for a looming global pilot shortage.

In the January edition of Airliner World, we head to Olbia to find out whether new Qatar Airways affiliate Air Italy is a new flag carrier in the making. We also hear from Atlas Air president and CEO William J Flynn about how the company has evolved into the world’s largest ACMI provider, and we remember Air Europe, the humble British leisure carrier whose global ambitions ultimately led to catastrophic failure. Elsewhere in this issue, we shine the spotlight on Swoop, WestJet’s plucky new budget subsidiary that aims to revolutionise the way Canadians (and even some Americans) travel, and we find out how Stockholm’s Arlanda – once largely bereft of the traditionally Swedish ‘form and function’ – is now a model of efficiency. We also make the trip to New Zealand’s South Island and fly to the eighth wonder of the world, the Milford Sound fjord, we join the freight dogs on the jumpseat of the last Boeing 737-200 in the Philippines, and we chronicle the development of the Ilyushin Il-86/96, the Soviet Union’s first and only widebody airliner family. Finally, we bring you our comprehensive coverage of worldwide news, including a full report from the official opening of Istanbul’s new airport, plus Air Astana outlines plans to launch a low-cost subsidiary, Icelandair moves to acquire WOW air, Bombardier offloads its Q400 programme and the Airbus A330-800 completes its maiden flight. We also have all our regular sections covering the latest commercial aircraft acquisitions, up-to-date accident reports and developments from the world of aviation training and MROs, and we give you the chance to win a year’s subscription in our caption competition.
