Syrian Airlines has expanded its Airbus A320 fleet, with the first two of eight Airbus A320 Family aircraft arriving on August 29.
The two pre-owned A320s have entered the Syrian register as YK-AKI (c/n 3956) and YK-AKJ (c/n 5296). Both are configured for 156 passengers – 12 in business class and 144 in economy. Six additional A320 Family aircraft are due to follow in stages.
Officials said the expanded fleet will allow Syrian Airlines to introduce further destinations, increase frequencies and improve schedule reliability.
The capacity increase comes as the airline begins to rebuild its network after years of conflict and international restrictions. Weekly Damascus-Moscow/Sheremetyevo services resumed on August 16 after being suspended in December 2024. Flights to Amsterdam began on July 2, and weekly Madinah services were reinstated on August 11. On September 21, Syrian Airlines is scheduled to commence direct services from Damascus to both Vienna and Copenhagen.
The expansion comes as the US government eased restrictions affecting Syrian aviation. Washington formally removed Syria from its State Sponsors of Terrorism list on August 24, ending a designation imposed in 1979.
While the change does not automatically permit Syrian Airlines to launch US services, the move could prove more immediately significant by reducing barriers to conducting aviation-related business with Syria.
