March 5: Atlas Air, aircraft operating company, has been awarded a contract by Boeing to operate its fleet of four 747 ‘Dreamlifter’ cargo transporters for the next nine years.

Boeing uses the converted 747-400s to ferry parts for the 787 Dreamliner between its subcontractors around the world and the manufacturer’s assembly plants in the USA. Atlas Air will receive revenue for the operation of the Dreamlifters, with Boeing still owning the aircraft and assuming responsibility for certain direct costs, such as fuel.
